Nintendo´s Wii U Sales Fall

Nintendo has sold 3.61 million Wii U units worldwide to date, and says it's anticipating nine million units sold by March 2014. But how come Nintendo sold just 160,000 WiiU units in the three months to June? The console is doing so bad that some retailers are deciding to drop the troubled console.
The BBC is reporting overall sales of the beleaguered console fell nearly 4% to 81.5bn yen ($US832m) but the firm reported a profit for the latest quarter, helped by the weaker value of the yen.
Even the Wii outsold the Wii U, moving 210,000 units during the last three months!
The news comes as one British supermarket chain has decided to drop the WiiU entirely from its roster, with the company unable to shift its stock of the console despite two unsanctioned price cuts since March. It seems everyone is bailing out on Nintendo and  they have a good reason. UK Games editor at EGN.com Keza Macdonald told BBC World News that users were increasingly turning to smartphones and iPads for gaming.
"The next six months is going to be absolutely crucial for Nintendo... If the Wii U doesn't pick up, it would be sensible to think about launching a new console rather than flogging a dead horse... 160,000 units is dismal".
The sales figures come as Microsoft and Sony are both preparing to release their next generation efforts, expected in October or November this year. Both consoles have been topping Amazon's 'best sellers' list since being available for pre-order last month.
Nintendo's original Wii console sold well but was marred by poor software sales and an overall lack of strong titles in comparison to the Xbox 360 and PS3.
